One Family At A Time
Rice Scholarship Program
Many Cambodian families living in extreme poverty are forced to remove their children from school to commence work – these young children often only earn a few cents each day, generally collecting rubbish and scavenging for food. Sometimes they’re left at home to care for younger siblings so their parents can go to work.
Each of the families we work with express a strong desire for their children to attend school but are faced with a daily fight for survival which unfortunately means often a child’s education comes second to food.
We developed this program in 2016 and run it in partnership with a number of schools including Duon Sva Primary and Secondary Schools. We provide students with 10kg of rice every month in return for them having outstanding school attendance. In addition to the monthly rice allocation, One Family At A Time also provides bicycles, helmets, uniforms, school supplies, Days for Girls kits and much more!
We are enormously proud of this program, the students and their families and it is one of our most cost effective programs which consistently produces excellent outcomes. The cost of the program is AUD$120 per student for a full year.
When this program commenced in 2016, the average attendance rate for students was around 35 – 55% each month. Our minimum expectation is 85% attendance every month (except in times of illness or special circumstances) and the actual attendance for each student is consistently in excess of 90%. School attendance is monitored by OFAAT staff in conjunction with the schools and reported monthly.
The program can’t run without donors and we are fortunate to have great support for this program. If you would like to become a donor, we would love to hear from you or alternatively, you can set up a regular “Give Now” donation of $10 per month or $120 per year. Tax receipts will be automatically sent to you!
